James Joyce In Ancona

In 1903 Ancona wasn't the beautiful city it is now. One morning James Joyce got off the boat from Fiume after spending the night on deck. He described Ancona as "a filthy hole like rotten cabbage ... (with)... something Irish in its bleak gaunt, beggarly ugliness".
